History

BCcampus was established in 2003 by the Ministry of Advanced Education to strengthen collaboration and innovation across British Columbia’s post-secondary sector. Our early work focused on expanding access to online learning, supporting shared services for institutions, and developing province-wide initiatives that helped educators adopt emerging technologies. Through these efforts, BCcampus became a central hub for connecting institutions, sharing expertise, and advancing digital learning in B.C.

Over time, BCcampus expanded its mandate to include open education, teaching and learning professional development, and sector-wide capacity building. It led some of Canada’s earliest and most influential open textbook and open educational practices initiatives, reducing costs for students while increasing access to high-quality learning materials. Today, we continue to collaborate with institutions, educators, funders, and partners across the province to support innovation, equity, and excellence in post-secondary education.

Vision

BCcampus envisions vibrant educational communities and systems, a culture of continuous improvement, and equitable access to education for all.

Mandate

BCcampus drives innovation in teaching, learning, and open education in alignment with B.C.’s post-secondary system priorities. To fulfil its mandate, BCcampus:

  • leads projects and facilitates collaboration in teaching, learning, and open education that support post-secondary educators.

  • develops and delivers professional development for educators.

  • curates, manages, and distributes collections of open educational resources.

  • collaborates with, and is responsible to, the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, post-secondary institutions, and other system partners.

Our Impact

At BCcampus, we believe our work really matters and makes a difference in post-secondary education across the province. Each year we publish an Impact Report sharing the vital collaborations both within our organization and across the post-secondary community. It also shares stories of the difference we make in fostering innovation, accessibility, and excellence in education across British Columbia.
